October Flash - Day 14

The Flash Fiction Project at Google+ has something new going on!   There will be a visual prompt for every day in October, and I'm going to try to write a (very) short piece for it every day as well. Due to time zone differences, I'll try writing and posting mine early in the morning, so it's a day after the original post for me, but still the same for them.

Let the fun begin! Here is the prompt for today:

We are the children of urbanisation, shadows walking the streets of overcrowded, polluted cities.
We only come out around dusk and dawn, when we are largest and strongest. Humans avoid us; they try to stay inside while we roam the streets. We clean for them, but we also creep them out. There is nothing we can do about that. We were created as shadows and we cannot take on a more pleasing aspect for the masses. Still, we hope that someday they will overcome their fear and show us their gratitude. After all, without us they could not live the way they do.
It is us, without flesh that can be poisoned, who take away the smog, the radiation, the dirt with which humans soil the earth. We suck it all up, it makes us stronger. They should be thankful, but whenever we meet them out in the streets, they walk all over us with disregard.
Humans owe us their health, their way of living, and the fact that they still have a planet to live on. If they don't learn to show gratitude, we will learn how to build bodies out of their trash. We will teach them how to behave.
Until then, we are the shadows, the children of urbanisation.

Urbanization is a Public Health Menace
