October Flash - Day 9

The Flash Fiction Project at Google+ has something new going on!   There will be a visual prompt for every day in October, and I'm going to try to write a (very) short piece for it every day as well. Due to time zone differences, I'll try writing and posting mine early in the morning, so it's a day after the original post for me, but still the same for them.

Let the fun begin! Here is the prompt for today:

There will always be money in mushrooms. Their delicate forms cannot be imitated by science, and the connoisseur will discern a synthetic taste from the real thing every time. There is simply no other way than the good old one. Only it isn't very good, is it?
The work with mushrooms is dirty, unhealthy and hard. Of course, we are never paid what our work's worth. There may be money in mushrooms, but it's never for the worker. Still, we don't complain. It is work that has to be done, and in any case it is better than no work at all. People who complain are replaced by people who don't.
I grew up in a family of mushroom farmers. I know what it can do to you, but I never knew anything else. My parents taught me when I was a little girl, I helped them whenever I could. I was grown into it, raised to raise mushrooms. Never complaining, I enjoyed spending time with my parents, learning the secrets from them.
I had to grow up to start wondering if there is something else out there, anything at all. I never asked out loud, it would have offended them. Now I know there could have been more, but it is too late.
I am a mushroom farmer, and we never complain. We grow mushrooms, and we breed the mushroom farmers that come after us. My daughter loves it. Who am I to ask for more?
